Meet Phyto Spa Co-founder

Phyto Spa was founded three years ago, but my story began over three decades ago. Born in the coastal city of Galle, Sri Lanka, my journey in science and natural healing started in the vibrant landscapes of my homeland. Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, has a rich heritage of traditional medicine that dates back thousands of years. As the granddaughter of a practitioner of Hela Wedakama, a unique form of Sri Lankan traditional medicine, my childhood was filled with the scents of herbs and the comforting knowledge passed down through generations. These early experiences sparked a deep love for the natural world and a desire to blend traditional medicine with modern science—a path I've been passionate about ever since.

I pursued my passion for chemistry and plant science by earning a Bachelor of Honors degree in Chemistry and later, a Master of Philosophy degree in Natural Product Chemistry in Sri Lanka. My research focused on exploring the therapeutic potential of Sri Lanka’s vast array of medicinal plants, delving into the molecular secrets that have made them effective remedies for thousands of years. This rigorous academic foundation in natural product chemistry solidified my understanding of the intricate relationships between plant molecules and human health.

Eager to broaden my knowledge and apply it to even bigger scientific questions, I moved to New Zealand to pursue a PhD. This was a pivotal chapter in my career, but it was also deeply personal. My research focused on the anti-inflammatory activity of Kawakawa leaves, a native New Zealand plant, using brain neuron cells. I was amazed by how the high content of anti-inflammatory molecules like diayangambin and myristicin in Kawakawa leaves could reduce inflammatory modulators in brain cells, potentially slowing down diabetes-induced vascular dementia.

Throughout my entire scientific journey, I’ve had the privilege of studying the incredible ways plants interact with our bodies. I’ve explored their anti-cancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their ability to slow down skin aging. Each discovery deepened my respect for the natural world and reinforced my belief that plants are more than just part of our environment; they are vital partners in our health and well-being. This connection inspired me to create Phyto Spa, where the powerful bond between plants and human health is celebrated. My hope is that when you use our products, you feel the connection to nature and to the plants. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us!
